We asked the Explorers to plan their own meeting activities for future programme events. We also played a few games, one of which involved a relay where the Explorer at the back of the line was shown an image which they had to draw on the person in front’s back and so on until the person at the front of the line had to replicate the image by drawing it onto paper
Young Leader Training 18/05/2023 (updated 18/05/2023) | By Tabs On the 12th April we initiated our Young Leader training with Module A. Young Leaders are members who also help with other units such as Beavers or Cubs on a regular basis. To do this YLs need to complete their Young Leader Award which covers topics like 1st aid training, how to teach skills to others and on this occaision how to keep themselves and others safe.

Royal volunteers join 3rd Upton Scouts for Big Help Out 15/05/2023 (updated 15/05/2023) | By Harrison Saunders There were some familiar faces on hand to give a ‘Big Help Out’ to Scouts in Slough on bank holiday Monday, the culmination of a special Coronation weekend in which our county featured prominently in the celebrations. Fresh from Saturday’s historic Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla, and Sunday night’s musical extravaganza outside Windsor Castle, Their Royal Highnesses The Prince and Princess of Wales – as well as Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis – joined 3rd Upton Scouts to help with important building renovations. Scouts across the UK have been involved in the Big Help Out, a national day of volunteering in recognition of HM The King’s public service. The initiative, designed to create new opportunities for people to get involved in charitable work locally, has given us a chance to show just how much fun can be had from our adventurous and skills-based activities. Royal renovations The Princess of Wales has been Scouts’ Joint President since 2020, but the visit to 3rd Upton allowed the entire family to get stuck in. Five-year-old Prince Louis would have been the envy of Squirrel Scouts around the UK as he sat in a digger operated by his father, the Prince of Wales. Princess Charlotte and Prince George were fully involved in the renovation work, too, which will leave a long-lasting positive impact on the community. 3rd Upton’s meeting place was built in 1982 and needed a few key improvements. It’s a building with a special place in the community’s heart, as it’s also used by the local mosque, a senior citizens contact group for members of the Asian community. ‘Slough All Nations’ use the building, too. They’re a group with heritage spanning across St. Kitts & Nevis. The group provides much-needed recreation and leisure activities to improve health and wellbeing and promote community cohesion. Leaving a lasting legacy The volunteers helped with resetting a path, digging a new soakaway, sanding, and revarnishing the front door, and adding planters to the front of the building. Inside, they replaced the carpet and fixed a mural to create a lasting legacy of the fantastic Big Help Out initiative, and everyone got their own #TheBigHelpOut badge. It was an incredible end to the bank holiday weekend, and one that reminds us of the brilliant impact we have when we come together. The Big Help Out was led by Scouts with other charities as a chance to highlight the benefits of volunteering. With events all over the country, thousands of people were inspired to make a difference in their communities. Many people felt encouraged to try volunteering for the first time, and we celebrated the amazing work existing volunteers do with our young people every day. Scouts across the nations got up to so many fantastic things. They ran exciting events and helped create a lasting volunteer legacy from the Coronation weekend. Chief Scout Bear Grylls said: “It’s been so exciting to see so many people across the UK take part in The Big Help Out. I’m immensely proud of how Scouts are setting such great examples for people to follow. The Big Help Out is a brilliant way to raise awareness of volunteering and to visually show what a difference we can make when we come together. Seeing so many groups helping their local communities in unique ways has been great to see! It was also wonderful to see Scouts leading the way for volunteering and inspiring thousands across the country to make a change for the better, whether it’s big or small.”
Slough Leader receives his Queen Scout Award 26/04/2023 (updated 26/04/2023) | By Loz Congratulations to Ed on achieving his Queen Scout Award. At the weekend he attended the National Day of Celebration at Windsor Castle to receive his much-deserved award.
International Pancake Evening 25/04/2023 (updated 25/04/2023) | By Tabs Shrove Tuesday 2023 collided with Scouts Founders Day, which is the day all Scout members celebrate as the ‘founding’ day of Scouting. We chose to mix up traditional pancakes to have an international theme to honour the international family of Scouting. There were more traditional flavours of lemon and sugar however there were also pancakes with shredded duck, cucumber and one with all the ingredients provided!
2022 Remembrance Parade Slough 25/04/2023 (updated 25/04/2023) | By Tabs On Remembrance Sunday 2022 1st Slough Explorers attented Slough Borough’s annual Remembrance Parade. We held a service in Slough town centre and marched in formation to St Mary’s where a church service was held, followed by wreath laying at St Mary’s war memorial.

The Explorers compiled a short presentation about themselves with interesting facts and even the Leaders participated!

It is a chance to take part in a ten-day adventure which brings you a true understanding of a country, its culture and way of life. You will travel through Bulgaria, working as part of a small team to complete a series of projects and most importantly by meeting local people. Who can take part? You should be aged 16 to 24 and a member of the Scout Association. You will be in teams of three or more and you can apply as a group or if you’re on your own we will team you up. When do we go? Saturday 3rd August 2024 to Saturday 17th August 2024. We will arrive in Sofia where you will have a day and half to get acclimatised and prepare for your expedition. The next ten days are up to you! You will plan your own route, travelling across the country to complete one main project and several smaller projects as you go. At the end of the expedition the teams will reunite in Sofia, where there will be several surprises planned for you to celebrate completing the Explorer Belt Expedition! How much does it cost? £995, a £50 non-refundable deposit will secure your place. Following this you will pay four payments. The first three will be £250 due at the beginning of November 2023, February 2024 and April 2024. The final payment of £195 will be due at the beginning of June 2024. What is included? The price covers a training camp in the UK, flights to Sofia from a London airport, insurance, your daily travel, food and accommodation allowance whilst on the expedition, activities at the end of the expedition, an expedition neckerchief. When and where is the training camp? The camp will take place over the weekend 8th September to 10th September 2023 at Walter Davies Scout Campsite, Duffield Lane, Slough, SL2 4AL. How do I sign up?
